Unearthed Errata: Arcana Evolved Spellcasting Systems

by Tim Wallace

I initially set out to convert all of the spell templates from Arcana Evolved, but that was a bit tedious, and the majority of the templates seemed very similar many of the metamagic feats we already have in Pathfinder. Therefore, I decided to convert some of the spellcasting systems (namely laden spells, spell weaving, and the spontaneous casting of a larger pool of prepared spells) into feats for spellcasters to take.

New Feats
The following feats provide spellcasters with options similar to those found in Arcana Evolved.

Laden Spell (Metamagic)
You have learned how to reduce the difficulty of applying metamagic to spells.
Prerequisite: Any other metamagic feat.
Benefit: Laden spells are those cast using two slots rather than one, granting the spell significantly more power than it normally would have. The two slots are always of the same level, so casting a 3rd-level laden spell requires two 3rd-level slots. Diminished and heightened effects can be laden. Ladening the heightened effect of a 4th-level spell requires two 5th-level slots (for more info on diminished and heighted spell effects, check out the Compendium Arcanum series on shop.d20pfsrd.com or the “Multi-Variable Spells” section of this blog). When using a metamagic feat, you can choose to reduce the spell level modifier by one level by making the spell laden. For example, a 6th-level wizard could choose to augment either a 2nd-level spell (using a single 3rd-level spell slot) or a laden 3rd level spell (using two 3rd-level spell slots) with the Silent Spell metamagic feat. A spell can never be given two effects that both laden it—it cannot be “doubly laden.”
Below is a quick reference chart on applying metamagic feats to laden spells.

Spell Weaving
You expertise with magic allows you to repurpose the energy of less powerful spells.
Prerequisite: Caster level 1st.
Benefit: Lower-level spell slots can be woven together to power a higher-level spell, if the caster can cast spells of the higher level. A caster can combine three slots of one level to cast one spell of the next higher level. For example, a 7th-level witch, able to cast 3rd-level spells, can use three 2nd-level slots to power one 3rd-level spell. She could even take three 1st-level slots, convert them into a single 2nd-level slot, and use that, along with two other 2nd-level slots to power the 3rd-level spell. 0-level spells cannot be woven into higher-level spells.
A caster can use higher-level slots to power lower-level spells as well. One slot of a given spell level can be used to power two spells of the next lower level. Thus, the 7th-level witch could use one
2nd-level slot to power two 1st-level spells. The “exchange rate” of spell slots to power higher-level spells is not the same as that for spell slots powering lower-level spells, because magical energy is
expended in the transfer. Further, lower-level spell slots resulting from a caster using the power of higher-level spells cannot be used to power spells of a lower level still. For example, if a druid
uses a 6th-level spell slot to give herself two 5th-level spell slots, those slots cannot then be used to power multiple 4th-level spells.
Spellcasters who prepare spells daily must choose to weave spell slots when preparing their spells, while a spontaneous spellcaster chooses choose to weave spell slots at the time of casting the spell.

Spontaneous Preparation
Through great study, you have unlocked more versatility in your spellcasting.
Prerequisite: Prepared caster level 1st only.
Benefit: You can prepare a small set of spells to cast spontaneously, like an arcanist. Your available spells per day and spells prepared vary depending upon your class (see below). You do not gain any other class features of the arcanist.
Special: This feat can be select once for each prepared spellcasting class you take at least one level of. You must select this feat when you initially take the first level of each prepared spellcasting class.
